How to make a ringtone using Garageband app on iPhone

Looking to make custom ringtones with a voice, a live instrument, an iTunes song or just about any kind of audio? Garageband app for iPhone allows this flexibility! The following is a tutorial on how to record a voice, live instrument or an iTunes song and use it as a ringtone!

Recording a Voice or Sound and Save as a Ringtone

  1. Open Garageband on iPhone
  2. Select Audio Recorder (Picture of Microphone) in Instruments screen
  3. Turn off metronome next to record button at top middle of screen (Blue = Enabled, White = Disabled)
  4. Tap red record button (round red circle)
  5. Garageband will give a four count and then start recording
  6. After recording – Select down arrow at top left of screen
  7. Tap My Songs
  8. Tap My Song text (below recorder image)
  9. Rename voice recording to whatever you wish it to be and Tap Done
  10. Press and hold on recorded audio (image) and image will start wiggling
  11. Tap upload icon at top left of screen
  12. Tap Ringtone (image of bell)
  13. Tap Export
  14. Tap Use sound as….
  15. Select Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone or Assign to Contact and Tap Done

Save an iTunes Song for a Ringtone

  1. Open Garageband on iPhone
  2. Tap “+” at the top left to load new audio
  3. Select Audio Recorder (Picture of Microphone) in Instruments screen
  4. Select “+” below the gear on the top right of display
  5. Select “8 bars”
  6. Turn Automatic On and Tap Done
  7. Turn off metronome next to record button at top middle of screen (Blue = Enabled, White = Disabled)
  8. Tap Menu (at top left) to display individual track
  9. Select Audio Loops (in upper right corner, next to gear symbol)
  10. Select Music (at top right)
  11. Select Audio from Albums, Artists, Genres, Playlists or Songs
  12. Press and hold on song file and drag into Garageband track
  13. Tap on audio waveform and crop audio to desired section for ringtone
  14. Tap Down Arrow and Tap My Songs
  15. Tap My Song text (below recorder image)
  16. Rename voice recording to whatever you wish it to be and Tap Done
  17. Press and hold on recorded audio (image) and image will start wiggling
  18. Tap upload icon at top left of screen
  19. Tap Ringtone (image of bell)
  20. Tap Export
  21. Tap Use sound as….
  22. Select Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone or Assign to Contact and Tap Done
